Decolonial Migration™
“I will not allow my life’s light to be determined by the darkness around me.” —Sojourner Truth

“How can I ethically move to another country without feeling like I'm just another gentrifier?”
Welcome to Decolonial Migration™: An Experiment to Support Conscious Relocation
Evvie Lionheart has always been a traveler at heart, but their meandering emigration journey from the United States through places like Mexico, Peru, and Belize has been anything but conventional. Evvie brings a unique blend of lived experience and deep ancestral knowledge, grounded in the transformative power of decolonial principles, ancestral wisdom, and a commitment to ethical migration. For Evvie, migration is a path to freedom, personal sovereignty, and authentic connection to place—one they were called to follow, and one that they now guide others to approach with care, curiosity, and respect.
As a Black, queer, formerly homeless, disabled survivor of cultic abuse, Evvie’s journey stands apart from the typical narratives about migration. Evvie's relocation was not driven by wealth, health, or even a stable job offer, but by a calling to reconnect with ancestral practices, expand their understanding of plant medicine, and find genuine community in Latin America. Through building strong relationships, learning from Indigenous and local practices, and honoring the land and people in each place, Evvie discovered a new way of living that defies the colonial myths of what migration "should" look like. Now based in Belize, Evvie's story continues as they guide others in finding a path that feels equally authentic and aligned with ethical values.
Dispelling Myths About Migration
One of the biggest myths about moving abroad is that you need to be financially secure or already employed in the destination country to succeed. Evvie's experiences show that while financial planning and stability are essential, it is absolutely possible to start fresh without extraordinary wealth. Evvie has navigated complex immigration systems, language barriers, and new cultural norms without the typical safety nets, making them an ideal guide for others wishing to move beyond their comfort zones with integrity.
Another common belief is that only those in perfect health can take on international relocation. For Evvie, who has managed chronic health issues, learning to build supportive networks, develop resilience, and prioritize wellness practices within new cultural landscapes has been vital. Their approach respects the need for accommodations and acknowledges that with thoughtful preparation, moving abroad can be accessible to many with health challenges.
