2020 Book List
2020 has been a year of rapid change and transformation for many across the globe. These are the books we’re reading to inform our work this year.
These are a few of the books Evvie has been reading in 2020, that they will reference in workshops, conversations, and coaching. Many of these books will show up as recommended reading in Emergent Phoenix’s workshops.
Emergent Strategy
by adrienne maree brown
Foundational reading for working with Emergent Phoenix in any capacity. This text inspired Evvie to begin facilitation and consulting, and weaves together story, science and communal wisdom of great thinkers such as Grace Lee Boggs, Octavia Butler, Audre Lorde and others.
My Grandmother’s Hands
by Resmaa Menakem
The first book of its kind to examine the origins, present reality and paths to healing the trauma of white supremacy through a somatic lens.
The Politics of Trauma
by Staci K. Haines
Bringing somatics into context for those who engage in social justice and equity work, this is another of the essential readings integral to the mission, vision and values of Emergent Phoenix.
Rumi Oracle
by Alana Fairchild
This is Evvie’s favorite and most often used Oracle deck in 2020, and often used in readings for generative coaching and spiritual transformation work with Evvie.
The Woman’s Book Of Dreams
by Connie Kaplan
Gifted to Evvie in a 2020 Dream Circle, this has been a wonderful companion to journaling and deeply following the way the celestial bodies impact dream and waking life.
You Were Born For This
by Chani Nicholas
Astrology with a social justice lens, made accessible to anyone. Don’t be surprised if Evvie asks for your birthdate, time and location after a few meetings!
Ayurvedic Healing For Women
by Atreya Smith
Working to develop their knowledge of the body and healing outside the lens of western medicine and science, this book served as an introduction to an ongoing study of Ayurveda this year.
Working The Roots
by Michele Elizabeth Lee
Part reference text, part story and oral tradition, this book has served as a companion and reminder of Evvie’s ancestral lineage of Black American herbalism.
Parable Of The Sower
by Octavia E. Butler
No one can talk to Evvie for long without them mentioning Parable of The Sower, their favorite book. This graphic novel edition was a gift to Evvie at the start of 2020, and remains relevant as Parable became a NTY Bestseller for the first time in 2020.
